EUGENE
January 23, 1896: "The north end of the small covered bridge about a quarter of a mile north of Eugene went down this forenoon. That end of the bridge had rested on some trestle work built up on the bank of the slough which the bridge spans. During the high water this trestle work was undermined and this forenoon the weight of the bridge proved more than the bank could stand, and the end of the bridge dropped about five feet and now rests on a bank of sand and sediment, No one was on the bridge when it fell, but a team and wagon had crossed but a few minutes before. It is thought the bridge can be raised and placed on piling without much trouble." (The Eugene Guard)
September 1, 1904: "A report is in circulation to the effect that the Eugene bridge has been closed to traffic on accounty of repairs to the structure. This is erroneous. During the final adjustment of the bridge to the new pier the bridge was closed for about two hours Monday, but travel over the structure has been uninterrupted since that time." (Morning Register)
