January 4, 1933: "The Rochester bridge located on the Sutherlin-Elkton road, reported to be the oldest wooden bridge in the state of Oregon, was washed out by the torrential waters of the Calapooia Monday. This bridge was erected in 1865. It was built of hewn fir timbers, fastened with wooden pins. During the 67 years it has been in use, it has carried heavy traffic constantly. In its early years it was on the main artery between Scottsburg and Canyonville and carried the heavy freight brought in from the port to the inland. Despite its age it has had little repairs, and would have served for many more years had it not been floated off its foundations. The timbers were examined today, at a point about a half mile downstream from the former site of the bridge, and were found to still be in good condition." (The News-Review)
January 5, 1933: "A bridge across the Calapooia to replace the historic Rochester bridge, washed out in the flood Monday, will probably be built about a half mile down stream from the site of the former structure on the line of the proposed new road to Dodge canyon, the county court states. The matter, however, is in the hands of the state highway department, which has designated this road as a secondary highway, the state directing and supervising improvements.
The change in location, even without the construction of the entire new road, it is claimed, will shorten the distance by about a half mile to Roseburg, Oakland and Sutherlin through the elimination of nearly 15 turns on the old road." (The News-Review)
June 28, 1933: "The county bridge crew has been given instructions to start work immediately on the rebuilding of the Rochester bridge, west of Sutherlin, the old bridge having been washed out by high water early this year." (The News-Review)
June 30, 1933: "The secondary highway from Elkton to Sutherlin is to receive two new bridges, the Yellow creek bridge and the Rochester bridge, the latter having been washed out early this year. Construction of the latter bridge is already being started by the county. The sum of $12,000 is allowed for the Rochester bridge and $7,500 for the Yellow creek bridge." (The News-Review)
