December 1, 1921: "While the damages to county bridges and roads in western Lane is not as bad as first reported there has been considerable loss of bridges especially on the North Fork river, according to J.W. McArthur, county bridge superintendent, who returned yesterday afternoon from spending several days in the coast district. The water was higher than for 30 years and came up more rapidly than ever before in history, declares Mr. McArthur.
Two covered bridges on the North Fork river, one at Minerva and the other the Smith bridge, are out. However, they can be largely salvaged as they are nearly all complete, says the superintendent." (The Eugene Guard)

December 1, 1921: "The Smith bridge 60 feet long, about a mile above Minerva was taken out by the flood. The county court expected to replace this structure by the erection of a new one at a different location next year but it was hoped to use it until that time. Some means will have to be provided to cross the stream at that point." (Morning Register)
May 15, 1930: "With the swinging of a 75-foot span over the north fork of the Siuslaw river at Smith cut Friday, Lane county's bridge program will be well under way, according to Arthur Striker, county bridge superintendent." (The Eugene Guard)
May 23, 1930: "County bridge builders have made quick work of erecting a fine new bridge across the North Fork at what is generally known as Carlson's cut. The new bridge is built upstream at the side of the old one. It has a span of 85 feet and approaches at each end which brings the total length to more than 125 feet. The floor has been laid but the cover will not be put on until later in the year.
The cut thru the hill will be greatly enlarged to line up with the new structure. The carpenters will again take up work on the Condon creek bridge at once." (Siuslaw Oar)
June 29, 1930: "County bridge crews have practically completed work on three new spans in western Lane. The condon creek, Smith Cut and Portage bridges are about finished." (The Eugene Guard)
July 25, 1930: "The county bridge crew has erected the following bridges in this section this season: Smith Cut bridge, 75 feet span covered, with 42 and 15 feet spans." (Siuslaw Oar)
October 27, 1939: “Repair on the Smith Cut bridge is under way. A few months ago a truck lost traction and backed into the bridge losing a log in the accident. In rainy weather the grade is quite slick.” (Siuslaw Oar)

January 31, 1952: "Another concession to modern times is the recent replacement of the old covered 'Smith Cut Bridge' on the North Fork of the Siuslaw with a log bridge. This reduces to fifty-six the number of covered bridges in the county." (The Eugene Guard)
