February 5, 1959: "The last covered span in the Eugene area was the center of a 'save the bridge' campaign Thursday.
Residents of the Beacon Drive district off River Loop 1 north of Eugene were placing telephone calls to county officials and others in an effort to save 'their' bridge.
Mrs. Mildred Hileman, of the Beacon Drive area, said her group is planning to remonstrate to the county commissioners. The kids in the neighborhood use the covered bridge as a waiting place for school buses, she says. And artists sketch the historic bridge.
But county officials indicated there is little hope of preserving the bridge--at least under present road alignment--because it is becoming unsafe for travel.
County Highway Administrator H.O. Walberg said removal of the bridge isn't definitely on the time schedules yet. But the structure will likely come down this summer.
'A bulkhead is rotted out,' Walberg said. Emergency repairs are being made now. Walberg said he 'kinda likes covered bridges,' but they just aren't being built anymore.
The Beacon Drive bridge is 27 years old, according to county records. It crosses an overflow channel from the Willamette River.
P.M. Morse, former county surveyor who takes a special interest in covered bridges, said Wednesday that there are still 39 of the historic structures in Lane County. All but two are on county roads. The others belong to the state." (Eugene Register-Guard)
