1879 - 1926
March 8, 1926: "The largest project already adopted is the construction of a new bridge over the South Umpqua at Days Creek. The bridge will replace an old structure built in 1879. It will be located a short distance downstream from the present site affording a better approach at each end.
The present bridge is one of the oldest in the county, and is still in a good state of preservation, although badly weakened by the heavy traffic going over it during the past few years. The bridge which is of the Smith truss type and covered, was built in 1879, and for its day was one of the finest. The main timbers are still good, but they have been pulled away at the splices due to heavy traffic.
The new bridge will have a 140-foot steel span with a 18-foot roadway. There will be 126 feet of approach.
The road turns on to the present bridge at almost a right angle, and the new bridge will be built so that there will be an easy curve of not more than 28 degrees. Grading has already started on the new approaches. The cost of this project will be approximately $20,000." (The News-Review)

April 30, 1926: "O.N. Pierce of Portland submitted the low bid of 19,875 for the bridge over the South Umpqua river on the county road at Day's Creek in Douglas county." (The News-Review)
1925 - 1926: "A covered wood truss bridge over the South Umpqua near Days Creek had served the purpose well for almost 50 years but showed signs of weakness last spring, so a contact was let in April, 1929, to O.N. Pierce for construction of a 140-foot frame trestle with four 23 foot steel span bridge with four 23-foot and three 21-foot frame trestle spans the approaches. The old bridge was taken out by the high water the first of December and the new bridge had to be opened to traffic two days ahead of time, showing very close calculation of the life of the old bridge."
