March 25, 1958: "Marion county will keep at least one covered bridge as a souvenir of the past.
County Commissioner Ed Rogers said repair work was now in progress on a 100-foot covered span over Lower Abiqua creek, north of Silverton.
Rogers said the structure -- known as the 'Gallon House' bridge -- was on an unpaved and lightly traveled county road and that it had good foundations.
The bridge got its name more than 40 years ago when a liquor dispensary was opened at its north entrance to accommodate the more thirsty residents of Silverton.
The county commissioner voted to retain the bridge last week. It probably will be painted barn red as were many pioneer bridges." (Albany Democrat-Herald)
