October 17, 1911: "Solomon Cox, aged 17 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Cox, was killed Saturday night by being violently thrown to the flooring of a bridge near this city (Junction City) when a horse he rode collided with a wagon in the darkness.
The lad had been to one of the neighbors on a visit and had started home on horseback, and as was his habit, he let his horse go at a rapid gait in the darkness of the shaded lane leading to the long covered bridge crossing Bear creek, when the horse ran at full speed into the rear end of a wagon.
The horse threw his rider, fell and slid several feet on the bridge, and the team drawing the wagon took fright and ran away, breaking the wagon and throwing the driver, Chas. Schwader, out on the road.
Schwader then went to the home of C.E. Barrows nearby, secured a lantern and returned to the bridge where he found the boy lying in a pool of blood and in an unconscious condition. The father of the boy was telephoned for, and he brought a physician, but the boy only lived a few hours. An examination showed that his skull was fractured and his side and shoulders crushed."
