OAKLAND
Calapooya Creek
____ - 1913
September 15, 1904: "County bridge builder, R. Jennie, is busy with a force of men making needed repairs on the Oakland bridge." (The Plaindealer)
March 10, 1913: "The county court, in regular session today authorized the erection of a new bridge to replace the present structure spanning the Calapooia river, in the City of Oakland. The latter bridge will cost approximately $4,000 and will be constructed of steel and cement. The bridge will contain one 100 foot span, with approaches of about 100 feet on either end.
The bridge which it is proposed to replace was constructed nearly 40 years ago, and is badly in need of repairs. In fact, had the court decided to delay building a new bridge, fully $500 would necessarily have to be spent in repairs during the coming summer. The latter expenditure was considered extravagance, and as a result erection of the new bridge was authorized." (The Evening News)
March 14, 1913: "Before adjournment the first of the week, the county commissioners authorized the construction of three new bridges as follows: Calapooia bridge near Oakland, to cost $4,000.
The bridge near Oakland is to replace one constructed nearly forty years ago, and which is now in a dilapidated condition." (The Sutherlin Sun)
July 2, 1913: "County Engineer M. B. Germond returned here last night after a day spent at Oakland where he placed the grade stakes for the new bridge to be erected there during the present summer. Mr. Germond says the work of tearing down the old bridge is progressing nicely, and that actual construction of the new bridge will be commenced within a few days.
The bridge will span the Calapooia river, and will be a modern structure. The bridge should be completed before the heavy rains set in this fall." (The Evening News)
