GREENWOOD
Rickreall Creek
____ - ____
August 20, 1941: "The old covered bridge, over La Creole creek, which has served Polk county for more than 40 years, collapsed late yesterday under the weight of a loaded county gravel truck, the combined weight of which is estimated to have exceeded by two tons the county-posted load limit of four tons.
J.S. Lowry, of Rickreall, driver, had loaded his truck with gravel at Independence shortly after 5 o'clock and was making his last trip for the day when the ancient structure collapsed its entire length, dropping the truck approximately 20 feet. The truck was loaded with three tons of gravel. Lowry was taken to the office of a physician to receive treatment for cuts and bruises.
The bridge was located in the Greenwood district about six miles north of Independence and a short distance south of the Salem-Dallas highway west of the Oak Knoll golf course." (Daily Capital Journal)

August 21, 1941: "After being used in Polk county for about 40 years, the covered Greenwood bridge over LaCreole creek collapsed Monday under the weight of a county truck loaded with gravel which Sam Lowery was taking from Independence to Grande Ronde. The gravel was said to have weighed three tons and combined with the truck weight to have exceeded the county load limit.
Lowry said he was about the middle of the bridge when it seemed to break and by the time he reached the end of the span it went down. He was quite badly cut about the head and face and received a bad bump on top of his head.
His feet were wedged tight by the seat cushions and it was with difficulty that he manged to get loose and he managed to get loose and get out. He waded the creek, going to the Daryl Hewitt home nearby. Mrs. Hewitt took him to a Dallas doctor, who had to take a good many stitches.
One odd feature was that his eyeglasses were not broken although they had been torn off in some manner." (Statesman Journal)
August 21, 1941: "Plans had been made and the material was already on the ground to repair the Greenwood bridge over the Rickreall creek but fate stepped in and saved the county crew from having to wreck the old structure. Tuesday afternoon when a county gravel truck, fully loaded, was in the act of crossing the bridge, it suddenly collapsed and dropped the truck, load and driver to the bed of the creek, some 10 to 15 feet below. There were no witnesses to the incident and by the time nearby residents reached the scene Sam Lowry of Rickreall, driver of the truck, had scrambled to safety with only minor cuts and bruises to show for his experience. Work of rebuilding the bridge was started Wednesday." (Daily Capital Journal)
August 5, 1958: "A $40,043 project went to Orlando C. Bernard, Portland, for Greenwood bridge over Rickreall creek about three miles east of Rickreall creek about three miles east of Rickreall." (Corvallis Gazette-Times)
