June 8, 1889: "Elmira Bridge--Hon Rodney Scott authorized to advertise as provided by law for plans, specifications and bids for the construction of a covered bridge of a 60 foot span on county road across Long Tom at the place known as the Duckworth bridge at Elmira, and Monday, June 17, 1889, is hereby set for opening bids and awarding contracts." July 20, 1889: "The Elmira bridge across the Long Tom has been replaced by a new one. Johnny Zimmer acted as foreman of the construction." (The Eugene City Guard)
