TAYLOR'S GROVE
Little North Fork Santiam River
____ - ____
October 24, 1929: “The bridge over the Little North Fork near Taylor's grove almost tipped over Friday. William and Roy Carter were raising it to make some necessary repairs, heavy gravel trucks having broken down the approach on one end. The bridge is safe for travel again.” (Mill City Logue)
March 30, 1937: "The Taylor's Grove bridge must be either repaired of replaced, according to word received yesterday by County Commissioner Leroy Hewlett. Examination of the structure was ordered. Underpinning and other parts of the bridge are said to be rotting." (Statesman Journal)
April 30, 1937: "The tractor driver who miraculously escaped injury Monday when his 75-horsepower machine dropped 25 feet through the east approach to the Taylor's Grove bridge above Mehama was Ralph Siegmund, nephew of county Judge J.C. Siegmund, County Commissioner Roy Melson reported yesterday. The tractor landed on solid rock at the edge of the Little North Fork of the Santiam river.
New timbers were being delivered to the bridge yesterday in preparation for reconstruction of the demolished approach. County Engineer N.C. Hubbs said the tractor had sufficient power to drag itself out of the hole under its own power with the use of a winch.." (Statesman Journal)
May 6, 1937: "Judge Siegmund said he had directed Bridge Foreman Hennies to examine the Taylor's Grove bridge carefully to ascertain if it were worth replacement of the roof, which was damaged by winter snows." (Statesman Journal)
May 15, 1937: "The county court yesterday received a claim from W.A. Heater for $1500 damages which he said were done to his heavy caterpillar tractor when it broke through an approach to the Taylor's Grove bridge on the Little North Fork. Santiam river, a few weeks ago. He invited the county officials to examine the machine while it was dismantled for repairs.
District Attorney Lyle G. Page advised the court he did not think the county was liable. A sign warning against overloading the bridge had been placed there, County Engineer Hubbs said, but apparently had been torn down." (Statesman Journal)
August 6, 1951: "Rice also reported that notices of a six ton limit have been posted on the Taylor's Grove bridge across the Little North Fork of the Santiam and that a convenient place has been found for a tie in between the proposed cut-off between Taylor.s Grove and the new state highway leading up the North Fork of the Santiam river. Eventually it is proposed to do away with the bridge at Taylor's Grove and channel traffic from above that point over the three quarter mile of country road that will be built." February 28, 1952: "A delegation from the Taylor's Grove are Wednesday called on the Marion county court and asked that the Taylor's Grove bridge, The bridge, which at present has a load limit on it that permits only the passing over it of light vehicles, is to be checked this week by assistant county engineer, Ted Kuenzi." (Daily Capital Journal)
February 29, 1952: "A delegation from Mehama petitioned the Marion County Court for repair of the Taylor's Grove bridge so that it might be used for heavy hauling and logging.
The delegation, composed of logging interests in the Mehama area, stated that the load limit now enforced limits the bridge to light traffic and makes logging travel over the bridge impossible.
Ted Kuenzi, bridge foreman and assistant county engineer, stated he would examine the bridge this week to determine the extent of necessary repair." (Statesman Journal)
