UPPER PORTAGE
North Fork of the Siuslaw River
March 6, 1924: "Construction of a new bridge across the North Fork of the Siuslaw a short distance above Portage, and re-location of the road along the north bank of the river just above the bridge site, will be made this summer, according to L.N. Roney, county commissioner.
There is an old bridge now on the upstream neck of the portage peninsula, and this is due for replacement, says Roney. He will build the new bridge about 200 or 300 yards down stream, and straighten the road approaching it so that travel will remain on the north bank as far as possible. The bridge will have a short span of about 75 feet, and will have a piling approach." (The Eugene Guard)

May 3, 1924: "L.N. Roney, county commissioner, returned yesterday afternoon from the lower Siuslaw where he went to obtain lumber and pilings for the new county bridge to be erected across the North Fork at Portage. This bridge will replace the old one which the commissioner said is very bad shape and will have to be strengthened before the material for the new structure and the machinery for the improvement of the road can be hauled over it.
The commissioner made arrangements to get a quantity of cedar piling near the bridge site and the lumber from one of the lower Siuslaw mills." (Morning Register)
August 3, 1924: "A.C. Striker, county bridge foreman, came in from the west end of the county yesterday where he will soon start the bridge at McCloud creek and later on over to the north fork of the Siuslaw ar Portage. The latter will be a 75-foot bridge." (Morning Register)
September 28, 1924: "Mr. Demmick had the misfortune to have his left shoulder broken in two places when a timber fell on him, while he was working on the new bridge near the Portage on the North Fork." (Morning Register)

July 25, 1930: "The county bridge crew has erected the following bridges in this section this season: Portage bridge, 60 feet span covered, using old approaches." (Siuslaw Oar)
February 23, 1940: “A carload of fishermen, parked in the upper bridge at Portage, nearly caused an accident one day last week. The men were standing around the car when the Meadows truck approached with load of wood. The driver was unable to see the car or men until nearly in the bridge, with no room to pass. Good brakes saved an accident.” (Siuslaw Oar)
