August 14, 1954: "Work has started on construction of a 76-foot span to replace the Fox Bridge which crosses the North Fork of the Coquille River at Lee Valley, County Engineer Floyd Robb announced today.
The bridge is expected to be completed within about 40 working days.
The old Fox Bridge, torn down this week, was one of a few remaining covered bridges in Coos County. Original plans were to repair the bridge, but examination of the structure revealed that it was beyond repair, Robb said.
Robb said the Fox Bridge was constructed in 1917 and was one of the only two covered bridges recently in use on the county's roads. The other is located on the Myrtle Creek Road near Bridge.
Another covered bridge exists at Remote but is not in use. It was preserved at the request of several citizens as a 'souvenir' of past days, Robb said.
Although only one covered bridge is in use on county roads, there are six of them on the rail line running into Powers. At one time there were six covered bridges on county roads, but most were replaced." (The Coos Bay Times)
